After two years of working with Cornwall Council, we are thrilled to announce the official launch of The Old Library as a venue, performance space and cultural hub for Bodmin and beyond.
The Old Library, which had been empty for around two years before intoBodmin secured the lease, will open again to the public on Thursday 5th September; the launch day of our 2019 Autumn season. With 24 varied and wide-ranging events, this season sees more shows, workshops and other events than ever before, plus a years’ worth of Arts Council England funded activity across Bodmin, including the popular winter projection lightshow in November.
We're also thrilled to unveil The Old Library’s brand-new café, which has been created with funding from the Big Lottery, Bodmin Rotary and from individual donations, plus donations of labour, equipment and furniture from a host of local individuals and businesses. The Ola Café will be a tapas and Spanish style café and bar, run by familiar faces, Sirone Devadason and Marc Thorne, who plan to serve a selection of freshly made tapas, cakes and snacks, homemade using locally sourced produce wherever possible, plus barista coffee and a licensed bar. You can find Ola Café on Facebook here.
We've been running events here at The Old Library since September 2018, which have attracted more than 1500 people and have gathered a small community of wonderful supporters. The Old Library is not just a venue and café; we welcome community groups and organisations, and we're proud to be the new home to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, who are due to take on three rooms in September. Supporters have called The Old Library “a very valuable town facility” and said “hats off to the brains behind intoBodmin, an asset to our community.” We blushed when we read the comment that the intoBodmin team are a “dedicated group of people showing wonderful community spirit.”
Fin Irwin, intoBodmin’s Director, said:
“Our first year in the Old Library has been so exciting, with theatre, music and film screenings drawing artists and audiences from across the region. With the addition of the cafe, Citizen’s Advice upstairs and, later this year, a new co-working space, The Old Library is on track for being a significant cultural and community asset for Bodmin and Cornwall as a whole.”
The Old Library will officially open on Thursday 5th September with the season launch of a full programme of events from workshops, theatre, live music, dance and family shows. Our volunteers and Founder Supporters are invited to a season launch party on Wednesday 4th September, and the geeral public are welcome between 10 am and 4pm on Thursday 5th September, to try out the new Ola Café and help intoBodmin celebrate the official opening of The Old Library, followed by a performance of 2021: A Cornish Space Odyssey by Narwhal Ensemble, with a special offer on tickets for young people aged 14-18.
